1970s Adolfo Merlot Knit Dress

Adolfo Sardina began his career as a milliner for Bergdorf Goodman, Cristobal Balenciaga, Chanel and Emmé Millinery before he opened his own salon in 1962 and started designing clothes to show with his hats. In the late 1960s Adolfo started focusing on knitted styles in the mode of Chanel, and throughout his career until his salon closed in 1993, knits  remained a focal element in his designs. This dress is simple and classic with a modified empire waist, puffed shoulder and a boat neck. Thin alternating stripes of saffron and gray accent the neck, cuff and hem, with saffron and gray diamonds interspersed across a rich merlot background. Zips up the back. Labeled Adolfo for Saks Fifth Avenue, it is in excellent condition. The measurements laying flat, unstretched are: Bust 32, Waist 30, Hip 36, Shoulder 14, Sleeve 23, Length 40. Best on a modern size 6 to slender 8. $195
